This 36mm diameter 12x model combines a bright field of view with ease of use. The effective diameter of the objective lens is set at 36mm to achieve a bright field of view while maintaining portability, compactness, and lightness for outdoor use. The 3mm exit pupil diameter ensures a bright image that is easy to see even in daytime and dimly lit conditions. Ideal for birdwatching and landscape observation, it also provides a clear field of view for stargazing, minimizing the loss of contrast caused by urban brightness.
A Porro II prism for a bright field of view. Based on a design philosophy that prioritizes resolution and brightness, the Porro prism is used. Compared to roof prisms, the 12x36 IS III offers the advantage of eliminating the loss of sharpness caused by light interference and achieving total reflection without the need for special coatings. Furthermore, the 12x36 IS III's construction, which cements two prisms, minimizes light loss and uprights the image without damaging the incident light.
Clear image all the way to the periphery of the field of view: Doublet Field Flattener Lens. When focusing on a flat surface, the periphery of the field of view becomes blurred due to field curvature. A field flattener lens corrects this. The 12x36 IS III employs a "doublet field flattener lens" consisting of two such lenses. By effectively correcting distortion, it enhances flatness from the center to the periphery, resulting in a vivid image.
Ideally, all light hitting a Super Spectra-coated lens, which produces high-contrast images, should be transmitted. However, in reality, approximately 3-8% of the light is reflected per lens element. This reduces transmitted light and causes diffuse reflections within the lens barrel, resulting in flare and ghosting. Super Spectra coating reduces this. Multilayer coatings deposited on the lens surfaces effectively suppress reflected light across a wide wavelength range, achieving high transmittance and contrast. The 12x36 IS III features this coating on each lens and prism. Ample 14.5mm Eye Relief: Approximately 14.5mm of eye relief ensures comfortable viewing over long periods of time. Even eyeglass wearers can enjoy a clear, unobstructed view of the entire field of view. Vari-Angle Prism for Image Stabilization in Binoculars: Binoculars require vibration-isolating mechanisms that are compact, lightweight, and highly responsive. To meet these demands, Canon developed its proprietary Vari-Angle Prism (VAP. The Vari-Angle Prism (VAP is essentially a "liquid lens," consisting of two glass plates and a bellows-shaped tube encasing a liquid. This lens changes shape in response to camera shake, changing the direction of light refraction and stabilizing the image. Even when handheld, you can capture clear images that take advantage of the lens's inherent high resolution.
A compact, reliable IS unit that precisely aligns the left and right optical axes. The compact IS unit achieves image stabilization without increasing the size of the binoculars. This unit mechanically connects the left and right VAPs and controls them collectively with a centrally located yaw/pitch drive actuator. This simple mechanism synchronizes the left and right VAPs, reliably maintaining the parallel alignment of their optical axes and contributing to stable, excellent imaging performance. Furthermore, the low load on the actuators also contributes to power saving.
Microcomputer Control for Superior Vibration Reduction: The image stabilization mechanism has been improved, employing the same microcomputer as the latest EF lenses and a new control algorithm. It is effective against a wider range of camera shake frequencies, from gentle shaking caused by breathing to small, rapid vibrations. The time it takes for the image to stabilize after pressing the image stabilization button has also been significantly reduced to less than three seconds. Image stabilization and low power consumption for approximately 9 hours of continuous operation. The new power circuit, high-performance microcomputer, and optimized control algorithms reduce power consumption by more than 50%.
